Roofing & Storm Damage Claims
Storm damage may affect roofing, siding, windows, fences, and interior spaces. From the ground, some roof impacts are difficult to see. Avoid climbing onto a roof and rely on safe, qualified inspection when needed.

First steps to consider
- Check for immediate hazards such as downed power lines, unstable structures, or active leaks; keep clear and contact appropriate emergency services if needed.
- Report the loss to your insurer and ask about inspection timing and emergency protection.
- Take photos from safe locations of the roofline, exterior, yard and any interior water staining.
- Use reasonable temporary protection to limit further damage when safe; save receipts and photograph the work before and after.
Get organized
What to gather
- Date and approximate time of the storm, and any available local weather or incident details
- Ground-level photos of each affected elevation, roof edges, gutters, windows and fences
- Photos of interior leaks and damaged personal property
- Inspection findings, roofer estimates, temporary repair receipts, and relevant prior roof records if available
What happens next
How the claim process usually goes
- 1
The carrier opens the claim and may schedule an inspection or request supporting records.
- 2
The property is inspected and an estimate is prepared; questions may arise about the cause, extent, or repair scope.
- 3
The insurer reviews the inspection and policy terms and communicates its decision and payment information.
- 4
If a later inspection or contractor scope identifies additional storm-related damage, preserve evidence and ask the insurer how to submit it for review.
